Buildings: Joe and Rika Mansueto Library
Joe and Rika Mansueto Library
Chicago, Illinois
The $81 million new library addition to the University's Regenstein library includes an underground automated storage retrieval system and a glass dome covering the Grand Reading Room. It is supported by a 50-foot deep slurry wall foundation.
For book storage the library will incorporate another innovative feature, an underground Automated Storage Retrieval System (ASRS). The ASRS system uses robotic cranes and a software/control system to retrieve and deliver books from underground bins to researchers within five minutes. Once completed, the ASRS system will be the largest underground library retrieval system in the United States.
Combined with tight site restrictions and narrow temperature and humidity requirements for the library's books, these innovative features will make construction a challenge, demanding sensitive and intelligent management. During pre-construction, Cotter worked closely with the University reviewing drawings, coordinating design activities, construction managers and specialty consultants, value engineering and negotiating the GMP. With construction underway Cotter is assisting the University onsite with oversight of construction management activities including monitoring quality, schedule and budget goals.
